zines

Drew Miley Cyrus for Ryan Humphrey/withapancilinhand zine project.
Not sure I like this drawing too much...

Anyway, you can see it on his issuu profile, alongside loads of other great Miley submissions.

happy new year

Here's an italian greyhound I hand sewed, based on an old drawing, out of scrap fabric.
He's helping me fix the ostrich egg that I broke in the process of rearranging furniture in my studio.

new printing

Last weekend I attended a really great workshop on collagraph, conducted by Jules Allen.
It was a pretty intense day - never done collagraph printing before so I had a lot to learn! As the name might suggest, the process involves collaging various materials onto a card base, inking up the relief plate and running it through a press to print. I tried two versions - the first plate with just flat paper and card pieces, the second plate with more texture. Here are the results:

refresher

This weekend I attended a marvellous beginners course in lino print at Tasburgh Village Hall, in the wilds of Norfolk, run by the marvellous Sally Hirst. It was marvellous.

Learned some new techniques: collaging fine paper into prints as a way of short-cutting colour application, and I learned that Caligo ink is rather good (sub. 'marvellous' Ed.) And available locally from Norwich Art Supplies!

I also created this marvellous 3 part reduction print of Norwich Cathedral, for the marvellous Norfolk Longbook project. Not bad for a days work, eh?

N.B. Norwich trivia: Sally's daughter is the talented and prolific musician Milly Hirst. Check out her music on Bare Feet Records, its marvellous.
